John's Memorial Fund for CALLS
Donation protected
John Shadrach's illustrious career as a teacher and mentor didn't come to end when he retired and moved to the island of his birth, the Commonwealth of Dominica. He saw that the youth on the island needed additional encouragement to rise beyond their circumstances by recognizing that if they set higher goals and standards for themselves they would be able to achieve more for themselves and their families. He worked with CALLS (Centre where Adolescents Learn to Love and Serve) which offers a transformative program for the at-risk adolescent/young adult population of Dominica. The Center facilitates the development of these youth into responsible, well-rounded individuals, empowering them to lead successful lives through the acquisition of new skills, a superb work ethic and an aptitude for entrepreneurship and service.
John Shadrach died on November 2nd, 2015. To honour his legacy, we have created a fund to continue his work in supporting the youth of Dominica. Our goal is to raise $2 000.00 CDA by the end of February 2016. The money raised will be donated directly to CALLS. An example of how the funds willl be used: $40.00 CDA per month will support a student in the program. Our goal of $2 000.00 CDA will enable us to sponsor 4 students for a year. Here is an example of a CALLS succes story:
"Rixon Elizee is an 18 year old young man from the village of Capuchin in the Commonwealth of Dominica. He is a past student of the Clifton Primary School, and a drop out from the Portsmouth Secondary School. Difficulty to adapt to the academic demands is seen as the main cause of his then failure.
After dropping out of school he successfully completed an Arc welding skills training program with the Youth Development Division at the Portsmouth Youth Centre. In spite of this achievement he continued to work as a small scale farmer in his village, a passion that he inherited at an early age, when he accompanied his dad to his farm on weekends. Sadly this did not give much assistance to his economic development, and thus contributed to a great level of personal frustration.
Rixon was encouraged to join the A GANAR programme by a very close friend who was already enrolled in it. He was very reluctant at first, but because of his desire to better his life, he took on the challenge, employed discipline and respect, and persevered to the end.
During his training in the CALLS A GANAR programme he was given the opportunity to continue training in Agriculture and Arc Welding, but to his surprise a new opportunity presented itself. Rixon grabbed this opportunity head on.
Currently, Rixon is being trained as a Horse Breeder and Care Taker at the Brandy Manor Equestrian Centre at Brandy estate in Portsmouth. He is excited about this new venture and is making the best out of it. Meanwhile, he has volunteered to continue being an advocate for the A GANAR programme and promises to encourage young men from his village to participate in future A GANAR."
John was passionate about empowering young people to be self-supportive problem solvers. He knew that the youth were the key to help Dominica flourish. Thank you so much for your donation; your generousity will make a difference in the lives of many.
