My sister and her husband were in a car accident on Friday, October 16th on their way from Phoenix to Vegas.
They were both admitted to the hospital. Steve's injuries required a surgery on his arm and will require physical therapy and possibly other treatments in the future.
My sister, Rhonda, was taken to one hospital, where she was evaluated and it was determined that her injuries were too severe to manage at that hospital, so she was airlifted to University Medical Center in LasVegas for surgery and treatment. Her injuries are extensive.
The first surgery that night lasted 8 hours and was to repair her severed brachial artery in her right arm. They took a vein from her leg to replace the damaged artery and the surgery was a success!
She also has a complete dislocation of the elbow and her 2 wrist bones (ulna and radius) are completely crushed into many pieces. She had a second surgery a few days later to put in an external fixator (halo) on her wrist in the hopes that some of her bones will fuse together naturally so they can add pins and rods and plates at a later date.
Her elbow dislocation and her wrist fractures were all compound injuries so she also received many stitches to sew up her arm in many places.
She spent 6 days in the hospital and is currently recovering at home, awaiting her next appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon to find out when and how the remainder of her treatment will play out. For sure, a surgery for a complete reconstruction of the elbow is in her near future, as well as a few other surgeries as she begins to heal.
UPDATE 10/28/2015...Rhonda endured another 10-hour surgery to clean up her arm because it had severe infection. They also put some plates in her wrist. They will do another surgery on Monday to reconstruct her elbow.
As you can imagine, medical bills, gas, medical treatments, and costs are mounting. Both are out of work indefinitely for now, so any way you can help will be appreciated and we are thankful for our friends and family.
