Twechar Primary School Grounds Transformation
Donation protected
This is our vision:
The Parent Council of Twechar Primary is starting a mission to make the school grounds fit for purpose. At present, the pupils have an uninspiring outdoor area which does little to foster play, learning or pride and this must change.
The campaign has two targets:
- to raise the sum of £9,500 for physical changes to the space
- to recruit the support of an army of Twechar volunteers to carry out some minor improvements according to their skills (including painting, building of raised beds, planting with the children).
Anyone living in Twechar can see into the school grounds on all sides as well as the many visitors to the area for hill walks. Imagine how wonderful it would be to see a bright, well-resourced and attractive space used not only at playtimes but for outdoor learning, eco-work and school events. The children deserve it and the teachers need it to enhance their lessons.
What’s the plan?
There are three phases to the project:
Phase 1 - immediate actions (by end April 2022)
The first £2,500 will be spent on:
- playground equipment which P7 playground champions will distribute and collect each breaktime. The playground champions will help the younger children to learn to play with the equipment and lead games
- supplying materials for a volunteer (already identified) to build raised beds to be planted up in the spring and immediately bring some life to the grounds
- beginning a repaint of the benches and selected walls by volunteers
Phase 2 - physical changes (by August 2022)
The bulk of the money (£7,000) will go towards:
- completing the repaint
- the installation of a ‘trim trail’ - see examples here
Phase 3 - grant-funded changes (by August 2023)
If we raise this £9,500, it will enable the Parent Council to show the community backing for our campaign in applying for grants to further develop the space.
We would like to secure grants for a further £30,000 to fund the installation of a covered ‘outdoor classroom’ (see photo below) which can be used in all weathers and to resurface one zone of the outdoor space as a multi-use games area with basketball nets and fencing to protect other children from the balls in use. We intend to apply to the National Lottery’s Awards for All, BBC’s Children in Need and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust to raise this money.
Can you help us achieve this vision?
Can you donate or give your time as a volunteer?
Do you know any businesses that could contribute either money or materials?
Do you have contacts with former connections fo Twechar who might contribute?
Anything you can do will help us with our mission. This is a community school and a community effort to make it the best it can be for our children.
