Hello Everyone!
My name is Deirdre O’Sullivan and I am the 2018 Galway Rose. In August, I travelled to Tralee to represent Galway in The Rose of Tralee Festival. It really was the most amazing experience. Thankfully, my year as the Galway Rose has just begun! There are many more adventures instore, one of which is my trip to Belarus.
For the past few years, The Rose of Tralee Festival has made an unbelievable impact on the lives of the victims of the nuclear tragedy of Chernobyl. A group of 2018 Roses will travel to Belarus on Saturday the 16th February 2019. It is our job while there, to show the children as much one-to-one love, care and attention which they rarely get, but so greatly deserve.
Our group will consist of approximately 21 Roses and 3 Rose Escorts. We will be staying in Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum/Orphanage for the duration of our visit. There are 170 children in the orphanage ranging in ages from 4 to 18 years of age and some older children who have been kept on to work in the orphanage. Like their ages, their medical problems range from severe deformities and mental issues, right up to mild mental effects with no physical problems.
Adi Roche will be accompanying us on the trip.
As you know a trip like this involves a lot of preparation and fundraising. Last year, the festival managed to raise a phenomenal €66,000 for the charity. This year we are hoping to match that!
I have received such an incredible amount of support from the moment I was selected as this year's Galway Rose. Already, I cannot thank you all enough. I feel so privileged to have been afforded this opportunity to travel to Vesnova and to represent Galway with such a fantastic group. I just need a little more of your help! Each donation, whether big or small, will be so greatly appreciated and will go towards helping such special children.
Thanking you all in advance,
With Love,
Deirdre
