The Haiti Task Force has worked with schools, orphanages, a clinic and churches throughout Haiti for over 30 years. The organization was originally a mission of the Rhode Island Conference United Church of Christ (RICUCC). Now the Haiti Task Force is part of the recently formed Southern New England Conference United Church of Christ (SNECUCC) and is part of the Haiti Partnership. The recent news reports of the assassination of the president of Haiti attempt to summarize the political situation in the country, mention the escalating violence in the streets and on the roads and the worsening economic conditions in this poorest of countries.

But the news has not been able to depict the toll these worsening conditions have taken on the people of Haiti. They have not conveyed the trauma for those who are living with gunshots outside their homes, making it unsafe for their children to go to school and unsafe to go to work. They do not tell the stories of people without enough money to buy food and, even if they had money, not being able to safely go out to find food. They cannot convey the abject terror of having to move through streets ravaged by gangs as you attempt to find housing in a safer neighborhood -- not only a dangerous venture, but very expensive.

Then, on August 14, a 7.2 earthquake struck in the southern portion of the country leaving over 1900 dead, thousands injured and even more people homeless.

The funds we raise will be used to provide the most basic human needs, food and safe shelter to:

Our translators who have not been able to get to work and are struggling to simply survive and keep their families safe;
An orphanage in one of Port au Prince's most needy and now most dangerous neighborhoods;
A Community Center in Gressier that is working to provide food and shelter to members of the surrounding communities;
The teachers and pastors of the schools and churches that can no longer operate safely amid the violence; and
Help the victims of the recent earthquake with basic needs such as food and water.
