Tyrone Fashaw was born in Eustis, Florida, on February 15, 1954. Tyrone and his family relocated to Perth Amboy, NJ, when he was 8 years old. He attended Perth Amboy High School where he excelled as a 3 sport student-athlete. He was a natural at most sports, so much so that he was given the nickname, "Flash" for his above-average speed.

After graduating from Perth Amboy High School in 1972, Tyrone attended Bloomfield College, where he majored in Education with a minor in Spanish. His athletic career continued on the collegiate level as a member of the football and baseball teams.

A few years after graduating college, Tyrone was hired as a bilingual social worker for the Middlesex County Board of Social Services where he was employed for 38 years. It was at the Board of Social Services that Tyrone diligently and with great compassion assisted those in great need. His abundant caseload within the food stamps and housing divisions was unequaled due to the overwhelming client demand that he serve as their caseworker. Tyrone’s humble beginnings helped develop a willingness within him to lend a helping hand whenever he could.

In 1989, Tyrone’s passion for sports transcended into coaching youth in both baseball and football. As an unpaid volunteer, he served in various positions from assistant coach, historian, vice-president, and president for both the Perth Amboy Youth Football League and the Perth Amboy Youth Baseball League. Tyrone’s efforts were recognized by both organizations on many occasions, however, receiving Coach of the Year honors was most special to him. His efforts were also recognized outside the borders of Perth Amboy when he was presented the Commitment to Youth Award by the Suburban Youth Football League 2018.

In 2000, he was employed as a Recreation Leader with the City of Perth Amboy, Office of Recreation. Tyrone was the lead staff member who provided instruction to thousands of Perth Amboy young sports enthusiasts. If dedicating his time to coaching and instructing wasn’t enough. He was a baseball umpire for over three decades, officiating both youth and adult softball and baseball games. As a member of the “Rec Team” his role spanned beyond the area of sport. Tyrone was essential in providing support to shelter operations for the City’s most vulnerable residents during times of natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, residential fires, and during severe winter weather conditions. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, he assisted in the distribution of meals to both students and families. For his efforts, Tyrone was presented the “Dedication to Community Award” by the City of Perth Amboy, acknowledging his devotion to creating a better community for all.

Tyrone was always keen on capturing the moment, his passion for photography did just that. He was revered by many for his unsolicited gesture of providing photo prints to many pleasantly surprised recipients. Whether it be a child’s first at bat in a game of teeball, a high school football player making the game winning catch or just the subtle interaction between parent and child, Tyrone had the knack of taking that special snapshot.

Throughout his numerous years of being involved in the community, many dubbed Tyrone as "Mr. Perth Amboy".

In honor of his memory, the LEAF Foundation will be presenting a scholarship to a deserving Perth Amboy student-athlete.
