Help Elizabeth and Her Service Dog, Moose

Donation protected
At age 2, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Almost a year later, she’s about to turn 3 and has had multiple emergency hospital stays since her diagnosis.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin. This can lead to life-threatening complications that we, Elizabeth’s loved ones, must constantly watch out for. It is unusual for such a young child to be diagnosed, and her age makes it challenging for her to communicate her symptoms with us.

In March, Elizabeth suffered a medical crisis that resulted in her being life-flighted from Idaho to her medical team in Portland. Seeing her listless and helpless in a hospital bed was heart-wrenching and solidified the knowledge that this lifelong disease will bring many obstacles for Elizabeth to overcome. She lives her life with such exuberant joy; we want to do all we can to be certain that continues.

Elizabeth’s medical team at OHSU has recommended a Diabetic Alert Dog for her. A Golden Retriever named Moose—trained by the Diabetic Alert Dogs of America—has been matched with Elizabeth and will be ready to come live with her on August 15.

Moose has worked hard getting ready to change Elizabeth’s life for the better. His preparation includes over 1,500 hours of intense service dog training, along with scent recognition and active alert certification. (The same methods the FBI and ATF use to train their scent detection dogs.) Due to the degree of specialization, the cost for Moose is high. Since service dogs are not covered by insurance, we need additional community support.

Here’s what Moose can do:
  • Alert to blood sugar events before they become dangerous
  • Sniff out rapidly or falling blood sugar up to 20 minutes before the glucose monitor
  • Alert Elizabeth’s parents (Jason and Aurora) at night while they are sleeping and might not notice symptoms
  • Bring Elizabeth’s parents (Jason and Aurora) sugar or insulin
  • Provide emotional support and peace of mind
It has been difficult for us to know that Elizabeth will face a lifelong battle with this autoimmune disorder. Having Moose will give her a great source of comfort and companionship as she faces doctor visits, hospital visits, finger pokes and injections.

We want to do whatever it takes to make Elizabeth’s life full and beautiful. If you feel moved to donate, we would be ever so grateful. We deeply appreciate your positive thoughts and prayers.
