Herzfeld Family Fund
Let's help the Herzfeld family cover their growing expenses, help their children become more independently mobile, and help them have a home that meets their current needs.
All four of the Herzfeld children have a form of Muscular Dystrophy, a condition that causes progressive muscle weakness resulting in dramatic loss of function. Two of the Herzfeld children are already confined to motorized chairs. Transferring into and out of chairs and beds has become exceedingly difficult. Transferring into and out of a car has become almost impossible. We would like to ensure that Rivka, Tziporah, Tzvi, and Racheli are able to move around their home and community as safely and independently as possible. Their current home isn't wheelchair accessible.
The family has significant out of pocket expenses and is unable to afford a wheelchair accessible van for their children. These vans can cost upward of $70,000- $80,000 and aren't covered by insurance. The family has entered an online contest in the hopes of winning a wheelchair accessible van. Please read their story and vote for them daily at http://www.mobilityawarenessmonth.com/entrant/esther-herzfeld-teaneck-nj/ until May 31. While having the greatest number of votes does significantly increase the odds of winning, it doesn't guarantee a win. It gets them included in a group of contestants to be considered for the prize. We would like to guarantee that the Herzfeld's achieve their dreams of having a safe way of transporting their children, and of being able to travel as a family.
Esther Herzfeld has been a beloved High School teacher in our community for many years (Central, Maayanot). She has had a great impact on those of us who were lucky enough to have had her as a teacher. For many, she has illuminated the world of poetry and literature, taught us to think critically and to express ourselves clearly. Let's show our support and appreciation. Let's help simplify their extraordinary financial challenge. Let's get this done for the Herzfeld family.
