The ICU can't have balloons, but we are keeping them in the van until he gets transfered to another (reg) room.

Friday
.... Y'all Super Nathan needs all the special prayers and healing vibes he can get!! Wednesday he was complaining that his back and right side (or both his sides) were hurting and I thought he might be constipated... Wed night we noticed that his right scrotum was red, swollen and painful. Thurs we took him into the doc for it. They sent us to the ER where he was diagnosed with a UTI and Epididymitis. Sent us home with antibiotics. He started throwing up around 11pm ... Including his meds, until almost 3am. Total of 10 plus times. No fever. Thought it might be the antibiotic, planned on calling in the AM. Friday: Woke up at 7:30 am and checked on him... He was red, whites of his eyes were red, he was hot. Checked his temp, 105. Scooped him up and to the ER ... ER ran some tests. Then we were sent to Children's Seattle with lights and sirens going the whole way.

He has what I said before, plus, severe sepsis now, acute kidney failure, and his white blood cell count is high, normal high is 10.5, he was at 27.6. He has been lethargic, sleeping a lot, barely responding. Took awhile to get his fever under control. Still very red. And pretty swollen where his eyes were almost swollen shut.. We suspect from the massive amounts of fluids he's been given

Saturday morning UPDATE: okay so this morning so far .... He isn't as swollen, but he is still swollen. He is uncomfortable. Complaining mostly about his head hurting and his belly .... His kidney function is better. He is looking a little better, not as septic.... Luckly we caught all this early. He has been on IV antibiotics since yesterday ... Ummm... He still is far from being himself.

Saturday Afternoon update. So Nathan was awake for a good hour today - he watched a little youtube, ate a few grapes and some cucumber. Then he was spent and back to sleep he goes. He wakes up to potty and cooperate during vitals (and yell and everyone, and express his great dismay) but we're thankful for the times he is waking up For sure! Right now it looks like we are going to be here for a few days (Yay! Mother's Day in the hospital! I AM SO (not) EXCITED!) ... Good news is - his kidneys are already improving, and his color is almost normal... the whites of his eyes are white again, the swelling in his face, hands and feet have gone, the circulation in his hands and feet are better .... (they were cold yesterday during his rip roaring fevers) ... oh and the sepsis is better too. His color is good, his BP is a lot better.... his heartrate isn't dancing around the 160's anymore.... they are keeping his fever at bay, and his pain in the tolerated range.... and he just sleeps. When he's hurting he'll let you know. He is very weak, I had him up on his feet for about 10 seconds today. He is very very very shaky .... but he is improving, and he looks better, and that's what we are focusing on He even laughed today!! And tried to smile a couple of times, his lips are very dry and chapped and sore.

6 AM Sunday - Mother's Day - Update: [Pic from late last night] So last night Nathan took a bit of a turn. For whatever reason the redness was coming back on his face. Even the white of his eyes again. His blood pressures haven't been real good either. The ICU team was consulted when we were in the ER because they were on the fence of admitting him to the ICU or reg. Ped Room... and the ICU staff thought he could be in a reg. room - however, they have been following and checking in multiple times a day (and night) and they were going to say he's good, he's on the mend yesterday, she said "I'll come back one more time" and then... low and behold, it's no longer "we think he's good" it's back to "yeah, we're worried." He was awake for maybe 3 hours TOPS yesterday, with other mini wake ups here and there to hollar at us about pain, potty, or what not - then back to sleep. After throwing a fit for hours in the ER after he couldn't eat or drink - he is only taking a few bites here and there (of mostly fruit) and sometimes I have to threaten to cry if he doesn't drink, and he'll finally drink for me. (He is on maintenance fluids right now.) He got his feed last night and tolerated it. One of his two IV sites blew so he's back down to one. His heart rate has been pretty good.... 100's 110's ... His kidney functions are definitely better. He is still on IV antibiotics. Um..... can't think of anything else to update on. Happy Mother's Day!! I spent my birthday in the hospital with him last year, why not Mother's Day this year!?!? LOL.... Anyway - I am tired. I'm going back to sleep (6:15 AM) ... I got up because Nathan was crying .... yep, going back to sleep.

Sunday afternoon - Mother's Day - Update .... So, Nathan is currently sleeping. This is the first big nap he's taken so far today, he's had cat naps ... He managed to eat a stalk of celery, two bites of watermelon, and 1/4 a strawberry. That's pretty much it. They had to replace his IV today. Both the ones that were placed on Friday were bad, one blew, the other was hurting him when it was used, so the IV team came in and and placed a new one in his right hand. We also found out that they are starting to narrow down what is going on with him. Some culture was positive. They are switching his antibiotics. I would say what I thought I heard the doctor call it - but I'm not 100% sure. Things are just basically holding at the moment. But I didn't want to leave anyone hanging. He is still really sick. His tiny little body is fighting something nasty, that's for sure. He's lost a couple of lbs since he's been in here. Not good at all.

Sunday Night: Nathan was up and walking, he was AMAZING!!! He insisting on taking a 2nd walk. He at some dinner (half a grilled cheese and some chocolate milk, but I'll take it!!) ... Makes me hope for home!

Monday Morning Update: Nathan went down hill fast. He was up and walking yesterday. He ate something substacial finally (half a grilled cheese sandwich, some chocolate milk) ... They were switching him to oral antibiotics... I was so excited thinking we might go home today or tomorrow..... And then it all happened. 9 PM he got his meds through his tube.Including the new antibiotic Bactrum ... In 15 to 30 min he was screaming he hurt all over. He was really itchy. Then he was throwing up. Shaking out of control. Heart rate was up to 180, blood pressure was low, but he was still being his firey self when ever anyone touched him. Then they called the rapid response. There were 8 people other than myself on his room. PICU had signed off on him early Sunday morning because he was doing so will and improving. Now the were back involved in his case. In a couple hours, doctors and nurses in and out, concerns over this and that, has he, is he, does he? Felt like it was spiraling out of control. Called Dennis. When he got here, they decided to move him to the PICU ...ASAP..... So about 4:30 AM we moved from our nice cozy room to the ICU room. It's not cozy. Everything was going on. It was decided he wasn't voiding all the way (something I suspected) .... Catheter was placed. They have him epinephrine to get his blood pressure to rise. It wasn't doing much. They have him more, poor him on a drip, still not helping much. I passed out..... Exhausted. Just woke up and we'll he has severe sepsis again. They are taking about maybe putting him on oxygen.... A cannula I think. He has some gram negative rod bacteria, they suspect Ecoli, but that is a guess at this point. They are putting in a central Picc line right now. He is swelling up because of all the fluids they are pumping in him. He is red again, the whites of his eyes are reddish. Fever is back. It's going to be a long day. Watching him walk yesterday, this is not what I expected for today.
