For those who don't know me, I’m a Speech-Language Pathologist who has worked with kids with speech and language disorders for five years now. I love helping children find their voice and as very passionate about encouraging language and literacy development for all children. Since having my son Charlie, I stay home with him and work from home as an independent consultant with Usborne Books & More. We sell incredibly engaging and educational children’s books that are designed to help children develop a love for books!
I’m partnering up with a local non-profit in Houston called Books Between Kids this month to collect new and like-new children’s books for at-risk elementary aged kids in Houston who are living in poverty. These students typically have very few books at home, which puts them at a disadvantage compared to their peers who have lots of books of their own. Book ownership is linked to reading proficiency and educational success. Books Between Kids collects new and like-new children’s books from the community, then brings them to schools in the Houston area to distribute to kids in need. Each child gets to go pick out six books from their set up, like a book fair, and keep them! I can just picture the excitement on each kid's face as they get to choose their own special books to own!
I think this organization is amazing and has the potential to make a really big impact in the Houston area by encouraging reading and learning in the next generation of kids. I would especially love to put Usborne Books in the hands of these kids- they are more durable, engaging, multi-sensory, and educational than any other books on the market. I believe they could encourage many reluctant readers to love reading!
I will be raising funds through donations over the next few weeks to purchase hundreds of brand new Usborne Books to donate. Usborne Books & More has an incredible policy for book drives, where for any book drive that raises over $250, Usborne will donate 50% of those sales in additional free books! So if I’m able to raise $2,000, Usborne Books & More will donate $1,000 more in free books! This will allow us to make a HUGE difference!! My team and I will be delivering our books to Books Between Kids on May 17th, and are SO excited to give so many books to children in the Houston area!
If you are local to the Houston area, contact me to arrange a drop off or pick-up of gently used children's books! Used books can be donated until May 15th.
If you would like to donate money towards purchasing brand new Usborne and Kane Miller Books, you can do so right here! Even $5 can make a difference and will pay for a book for a child in need!
A $25 donation will sponsor books for one child, and a $100 donation will sponsor four! Please consider donating today to greatly impact the lives of children in our city! Donations will be accepted until Monday, April 29th!
