Winter Term 2016

In my sophomore year of high school (2012-2103), I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina for three months. My time there was a life-changing experience and every year since I left Argentina, I have longed to go back; unfortunately, I have yet to be able to do so.
Luckily this year, my college (Oberlin College) presented me with the opportunity to do a project of my choice, in a place of my choice called Winter Term project. This project is a requirement and I’ll receive full credit for completing it. With that in mind, I began brainstorming ideas: I wanted to do something that was going to be really meaningful and have an impact on a larger community, but also relate to what I want to study. The first thing that came to mind was doing something in Argentina. I am planning to minor in Spanish so traveling to South American seemed to make sense. However, I didn’t want to travel 11,000 miles to simply brush up on my Spanish.
Instead, I decided to create a photography journal that will expose the extreme economic disparity between classes in the city of Buenos Aires. While I was living there, what became very apparent to me was the huge economic divide between classes. The indifferent attitude that the upper class had towards the struggles of the lower class was very upsetting and made me realize how sheltered and protected my life in the US is (and was).
As a prospective Politics and Studio Art double major with a minor in Spanish, doing my Winter Term project in Argentina felt like the perfect way for me to combine the three things that I am most passionate about and to expose this disparity, as well as revisit a place that I consider to be a second home.
Argentina is a place that I hold very close to my heart, however, it is not perfect by any means. Through my photography I hope to expose its shortcomings, and the lifestyles of the different classes, in a way that inspires people to become more aware of their privilege and how it impacts others. Ultimately, I plan on exhibiting my work and providing each of you with a signed copy of my photo journal from the project.
However, to make this project a reality, I need your help. My goal is to raise $2,000 by December 20th for the airfare plus incidentals related to the project, such as: film and printing. These combined costs are beyond what I or my family can afford as they are already paying for my college tuition. I am asking for contributions as little as $5 because I feel that if enough people participate, I will be able to make this dream a reality.
I know that everyone has their own lives and expenses to take care of so if you are not able to contribute, I completely understand.
If you can contribute, I would be more than grateful!
Thank you for taking the time to read my request and consider my proposition for my Winter Term project.
