WHO ARE WE?
UCLA Project RISHI (Rural India Social and Health Improvement) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that takes a community-based approach to sustainably developing and empowering the residents of a rural Indian village named Vadamanapakkam in Tamil Nadu. In partnership with local community members and social enterprises, we identify issues central to our target communities and provide the resources necessary to implement solutions through extensive field research and on-campus initiatives. The UCLA chapter works on improving the quality of life in our village by creating initiatives in education, women's empowerment, environmental sustainability, and clinic & pharmacy.

ABOUT INDIA TRIP:
With the generous support of our donors from last year, UCLA Project RISHI successfully traveled to India in December 2022. During this trip, we achieved several milestones, including implementing hand hygiene pamphlets in the school, distributing nutrition books to primary school children, conducting our annual medical camp with the village, and launching a menstrual pilot program in collaboration with Anahat Unnati. Additionally, we conducted comprehensive research to assess environmental, educational, and medical challenges in the village. Armed with these insights, we are committed to returning this year to implement solutions that address these critical issues and continue our mission of making a positive impact on the local community.

WHY THIS MATTERS:
Project RISHI must maintain strong relationships with the village because we value an equal-stakes partnership. Our goal is to develop trust with the villagers so they feel confident and comfortable receiving aid from RISHI, an external organization to their village. Our projects aim to improve nutrition, support the school children, and increase medical accessibility, which the village has specified as areas of improvement. We hope to establish new connections with various sectors of the village such as the women’s self-help groups and the school administrators.
