WHO ARE WE?

UCLA Project RISHI (Rural India Social and Health Improvement) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that takes a community-based approach to sustainably developing and empowering the residents of two rural Indian villages named Vadamanapakkam and Attrambakkam in Tamil Nadu. In partnership with local community members and social enterprises, we identify issues central to our target communities and provide the resources necessary to implement solutions through extensive field research and on-campus initiatives. The UCLA chapter works on improving the quality of life in our village by creating initiatives in fields of community empowerment, women's reproductive health, environmental sustainability, and healthcare.

ABOUT INDIA TRIP:

With the generous support of our donors from last year, UCLA Project RISHI successfully traveled to India in December 2023. During this trip, we achieved several milestones, including painting a mural to foster a sense of community within the youth of Vpak, implementing a water testing initiative, a PhotoVoice workshop to inspire community engagement and leadership in the youth, and running a medical camp that provided care from general physicians, ophthalmologists, and a pediatrician. This coming year, our initiatives are focused on youth empowerment, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene,) reproductive health, bringing telehealth to rural areas, and preventative health medical camps such as the Sankara Nethralaya eye camp.
