Major Accident Investigation Team officers are investigating a fatal one-vehicle crash during heavy rain Thursday afternoon on Interstate 516.

Cameron Jared Kelly, 23, was declared dead at the scene just south of Interstate 16. A passenger, Nikki Haire, 23, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center for treatment of injuries. She was listed in serious but stable condition Thursday night.

West Chatham Precinct officers were called to the scene of the crash at 5:51 p.m. and found the two in a black 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup that had overturned.

MAIT officers determined that the pickup driven by Kelly had been traveling east on I-16 and exited onto the southbound ramp of I-516 and attempted to merge into traffic. He lost control of the pickup, which traveled across the southbound lanes, striking a guardrail and coming to a rest on its roof.
