The Kern Family!

Posting this on behalf of the family that I work with.

Tyler Kern has been a life long resident in the twin ports area and has dedicated his life to his job and family. He is a father of three young children.

In June of this year, during a routine CT to monitor an aneurysm of the aortic root, it was a discovered that 3 dissections had formed as well as a 2nd aneurysm. He was officially unable to work since mid-June with the first of 2 surgeries scheduled in July to stint one dissection and coil off another. The 2nd surgery happened in mid-August to sleeve the major dissection and evacuate the aneurysm. There was a 7% chance that working this close to his spine would cause a spinal infarction. That complication did occur leaving permanent damage. After over a week in neuro trauma ICU, Tyler has been in Miller Dwan Rehab learning out to navigate with a wheelchair and more recently some maneuvering with a walker all due to the loss of strength in his legs. Complications arose, resulting in blood clots in his legs and chest as well as water retention. The levels of pain have varied and he has worked hard to get where he can come home soon. Unfortunately, Tyler will be unable to return to his position at the City of Superior due to the disability and soon his short term disability will run out. We are asking for any donations to help in these months as bills will continue to pile on when that STD does run out as well as having to pay for Cobra (medical coverage) in the meantime at the tune of over $3k per month to keep the family covered under insurance until Medical Assistance can be applied for. The family is working through the application process for disability which will take 6-12 months and have been told to expect it to be denied 1-2x at first.
