You may be asking why, if I have successfully self-published 35 books why I am here on GoFundMe seeking your help? I guess we all need a little help from friends at some point in our lives. I hesitate to talk about myself instead of the books, but here goes…

Here’s What Happened to Gil:

I’ve been here on Earth for 77 years and have been in perfect health, except for what hit me last year. It was about this time last year, and I was hit with excruciating back pain where I could barely walk. I tried Chiropractors, among other things, but nothing helped.

Then, in the ER, they discovered an old wound that became infected and spread infection throughout my body. They were treating the infection but couldn’t figure out what was causing the back pain. But then I finally was able to get an appointment with a top orthopedic surgeon. After taking X-rays, he spotted something that hadn’t shown up on earlier X-rays at the ER…

The infection had spread to my spine and had eaten away at it; I was days away from being paralyzed! The surgeon told me to immediately get over to the ER while he arranged for emergency surgery! I was in surgery till midnight. I kind of messed up his Friday evening.

The next morning, coming to, I must have been quite a sight, tubes and electrical devices hooked to me; I couldn’t have moved even if I was capable of it. There were some folks who didn’t think I would make it.

Then, several days later, still not able to walk, or much else, they wheeled me back to surgery. This time to remove a cancerous growth in that wound (some who saw it thought it was a bullet wound) behind my shoulder that had caused the infection.

A glitch prevented me from being put under. So, I had to keep telling the surgeon when to stop so he could use more of a topical deadening solution when it got too painful. Finally, he removed a growth that looked like a chicken thigh and was about the same size. Because this was up against muscles, I was hoping I wouldn’t lose the use of my right arm while also concerned if I would be able to walk again or survive the infection that they were pumping antibiotics into my veins for.

A couple of weeks later, I finally got to go home and then, with the help of several physical therapists, I had to work on learning to walk again. Finally, and in a very feeble way, I was able to start going upstairs to my office to start getting caught up on things. Even though I could only sit at my desk for a short time each day.

When I would get up, I had to use a walker to get around while I had to wear a back brace and be loaded down with a heavy backpack with antibiotics going into me through an IV in my arm. Most uncomfortable, and it all added to the pain.

But I was still alive, and I had hopes of eventually getting back to a normal life someday, although it seemed like a far-off dream.

Then it was a while before I was able to start making an income. About two months ago, my spine was completely healed, and they were able remove the titanium rods that had been supporting my spine since the surgery last year.

So, there I was, what seemed like almost a year of productivity taken out of my life, around $100,000 in medical bills and huge personal expenses piling up.

But most of those expenses have now been taken care of, thanks to medical insurance and my savings. And while I’m in great shape physically, there’s not much left to restore the business, start getting my 35 existing books marketed and to also cover the expenses of getting my current book #36 (shown above) finished and printed.
