Hi Everyone!
A little bit about me: My name is Danielle Saunders-Gauthier, and I am a full-time honours law student at Carleton University. As a Children’s Aid Society Crown Ward, I was faced with financial, educational, and social boundaries as a youth in care, and was often told I would not meet the expectations of society. As challenging as the hardships may have been, I viewed them as valuable life lessons as I not only overcame them but they contributed to my perseverance, work ethic, and my understanding of the society in which I live. Throughout these experiences, I learned the value and importance of helping others succeed, regardless of their differences or challenges in life. I am an active member of youth advocacy and the Free the Children organization. I have attended various volunteer trips abroad including Nicaragua and London, to assist in educational programs for children and youth. Ever since I can remember, It has been my dream to travel to Africa and work in a developing community.
What the funding will be used for: In Septemeber 2016, I was accepted to Makerere University in Uganda, Africa for international studies and a full-time internship with Insight Global Education. As of January 2017, I will be moving to Kampala, Uganda for a full-time (unpaid) internship/academic placement with Makerere University. The tutition costs are approximately $4825.00 USD, which is fairly cheap for an international student. However I will also be taking 3 online classes at Carleton University during my stay in Kampala. Therefore, I will be responsible for two part-time tutition costs (both national and international), not including flight and personal expenses. I will be working with an NGO partnered with Insight Global Education as an unpaid intern for approximately four months. As a full-time student and a part-time employee, this is fairly difficult to finacially manage. I will have no access to an income during my stay in Uganda, and therefore I am seeking your help! Every dollar raised will be paid directly to Insight Global Education and Makerere University to help fund my international tutition. This is an opportunity in which I have dreamed of my whole life, and I am beyond thankful for being awarded this position.
