East Meadow Action Committee

The East Meadow Action Committee (EMAC) is a group of University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) faculty, students, alumni, staff, and concerned community members. We have joined together in an effort to prevent development on one of the campus's most important scenic landmarks, the East Meadow, north and east of the intersection of Hagar and Coolidge Drive on the UCSC campus. The open meadows are central to UCSC’s world-renowned design aesthetic. This proposal overturns a fifty-year tradition of environmentally-conscious planning. We support more, better, and more affordable student housing and improved childcare facilities on campus. In an effort to convince the university to spare the meadow, we are retaining an attorney experienced in environmental (CEQA) law to assist with the complex task of commenting on the recently released Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR), a technical document of more than a thousand pages. Depending on the University’s response to comments on the EIR by EMAC and others, we may need to pursue litigation to stop the ground-breaking planned for late summer. Once that starts, the meadow is gone forever. 

 
The legal fees we will soon incur with respect to the EIR and potential litigation are high, many thousands of dollars. Thus we are appealing for financial support to permit us to go forward.   Our first legal bills have already come in.

In the event that, for whatever reason, good or bad, our movement ends with unspent funds, they will be donated to: The Second Harvest Food Bank and the Santa Cruz Homeless Shelter.
