Ukodus Portland Puzzle Tip Jar

I may be the planet's only artist with a full-time, public puzzle practice. In 2017, I began developing and deploying puzzle installations on the streets of Portland, Oregon. This has been my way of contributing to the culture of the beleaguered city that I love. These puzzles are of easy to moderate logical difficulty. They are roughly 5 feet wide and span from an adult's shoulders to their knees. Generally, I hang them between standing infrastructure, like telephone poles and street signs, using light duty rope. These public works are free to play and designed with an emphasis on fun, creativity and accessibility. Except during Oregon's COVID-19 lock down, I set up, several times a week, all year round. These days, I sanitize my gear, require masks and social distancing.

The mainstay of my pop-up gallery is the Weird Search puzzle. These are just like the commonly known word search puzzles, but they're comprised of unexpected symbols rather than English letters. This style of game works well because people already know how to play word search puzzles. The difference is that the player must search for unique patterns made up of strange symbols. I call these patterns 'weirds'. My current Weird Search puzzle is a combination of ancient Chinese characters and emojis.

Perhaps, my greatest accomplishment is that people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, sexualities, political affiliations and languages have been engaged in a moment of unanticipated curiosity. To date, thousands of perfect strangers have shared their time and engaged in an alternative space of impromptu discovery. I hope that by facilitating this event, where an individual is somewhat adjacent to their known universe, for both of us, new perspective is gained.

Please make a contribution and support me.

With gratitude,

joshua
