Unburden a Teen in Need; Help Fund her First Car
Donation protected
Friends, Family, Loved ones, Vermonters, and everyone else reading,
This summer, my husband and I became caretakers to the world’s greatest teenager (spoiler alert: we are loving every second of it). Our girl is equal parts spunky and goofy, emotionally intelligent and driven; a little Phoebe Buffay, a little Phoebe Bridgers, and 100% herself.
In fact, I've known her for a few years and it has always been such a joy to work with her. So when the opportunity to become her adults fell into our laps, it was a no-brainer. Our one stipulation was that she needs a car.
Vermont is a rural, snowy state. Folks who have never been here are shocked by how long it can take to get from point A to point B. Our home is about 40 minutes away from her work (where she is well-loved and trusted, a trainer for others learning the job), about 35 minutes away from her school (she has diligently worked on her studies this summer and is about to enter her final year!), and about 30 minutes from her doctor, therapist, and most friends. This is typical for much of Vermont. Reliable transportation is a necessity.
We are so proud of her for passing her driver's test and getting her license! We are even more proud of her for saving over $1000 to put toward her first car. And while so many things are going well-- she's saved money, we can support a bit monthly, a program she's involved in can help offset the cost of insurance, we even found a garage that will do discounted labor-- we still don't have a car for her.
My hope in writing this is that our community can show her what support really looks like. In far too many aspects, our kid has been self-reliant from a very young age. She is dedicated, capable, and more independent than she should have to be. She deserves to be taken care of, to have this necessity not be a burden on her shoulders alone, and we need to come together to do that.
Thank you all for any amount you are willing to donate to her future car. We appreciate it from the very bottoms of our hearts.
