Support Nicole's DACA Renewal!

Donation protected
A dear friend, artist, and activist in our community needs financial support for her and her family for a DACA renewal, immigration processing, and basic essentials during these uncertain political conditions. Nicole’s family is also dealing with grief and expenses associated with the recent loss of a loved one.

We are looking to support her by raising:

$500 for the lawyers fee for Nicole’s DACA court appearance on August 11th
$6,000 for her sister’s immigration processing/ adjustment of status asylum fees

If you are able to support our undocumented community, please donate so that Nicole and her family can have the funds to navigate this U.S immigration system without experiencing additional financial insecurity at this time. If you aren’t able to donate, please support by sharing this fund with your loved ones and close community!

Liberation work is never done in silos.

“Black organizers continue to build and stand at the forefront of abolitionist visions for collective liberation.”

        - California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance

----------------------------------

We also need to fight for the abolishment of immigrant detention and restoration of indigenous land and water rights. We need to see the abolishment of all systems of oppression and the global police state.

What does the recent reinstatement of DACA and it’s continued uncertainty mean for all of our communities and what work is still needed to be done to find us a more abolitionist solution, one that does not continue to allow for racialization, incarceration, abuse, deportation, and loss of lives?

“Reform will always be a bargaining chip to stop movements from truly shifting the status quo.”

      - CA Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance

Part of this liberation work is to support undocumented people fighting for their right to remain safe, fed, and housed.

Some immigration policies that have recently been enacted or have continued since the reinstatement of DACA on June 18th:

June 15th :
The government has proposed new regulations that would severely limit who is granted asylum in the U.S on the grounds of persecution. The proposed restrictions could make the following people ineligible for asylum:

- had a lawyer in another country while traveling to the U.S.
- made a mistake filing taxes
- couldn’t file taxes on time
- persecuted because you are Black, Indigenous, female, queer, trans
- escaping an abusive partner or family member
- fleeing gang or cartel violence or against your country’s corrupt government
- you were kidnapped or put in jail for a “brief” period
- received death threats if no one actually tried to kill you or succeeded in killing you
(~these are only some~)

July 6th:
Trump administration readying executive action on DACA - attempting to rescind the DACA program once again and obstruct applicants from filing.

July 6th:
New I.C.E Legislation for International Students in the U.S: non-immigrant F-1 and M-1 Visa-holding students whose schools are going online-only for Fall 2020 school semester are required to depart the US or transfer to a school with in-person instruction.

Hundreds of Years:
Dehumanizing xenophobic mistreatment of migrants, severe health endangerments, and sexual abuse of children in ICE and CBP detention camps.

----------------------------------

The costs and process for DACA applicants to receive a work permit:

- Locate and cover the costs of a Lawyer - $200-$600
(immigration proceedings are civil rather than criminal, participants don’t have a right to a lawyer. if informed of the advantages of navigating the complexities of the immigration court system with representation, need to locate and cover the costs or find free legal aid resources)
- Cover the processing fee - $965
- Get their fingerprints and photos taken - $85
- 3-6 months of wait time

State and Federal Aid that most undocumented people cannot access:

- Paid sick leave
- Stimulus checks
- Unemployment benefits
- Affordable healthcare
- Other state and federal aid
- Employment

These inequities are exacerbated by the current pandemic and health crisis.

----------------------------------

Although we ask for these immediate means of mutual aid, we must continue to work to end the police state in all its forms. We also know that although a work permit can offer economic access, it is merely another practice of exclusion and does not rid us of the deeply embedded racialization and criminalization of our Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities and those at the intersections of those identities.

“We must follow the leadership of Black immigrants in the fight to dismantle and defund immigration enforcement and policing” ~Detention Watch Network

----------------------------------

For those in our community who have the financial stability, stable housing, and/or familial support, redistributing resources helps to establish a system of collective care so that we all have enough to make it through this continued crisis. This moment is a direct result of the violence of the systems that surround patriarchy, capitalism, individualism, and white supremacy and mutual aid works to challenge those ideas.

Mutual aid is rooted in Black diasporic histories and has long existed to provide protection, support, and resources so that ~all~ communities have what they need.

How can we also continue the use of and institutionalize this practice? How can we provide for the collective need and resource each other going forward?

In Solidarity,
Loved ones of Nicole
