Unexpected disability... help me help my parents!
On June 29th, my Dad, Bernie, had a massive heart attack. He was resuscitated after about 15 minutes or so. If you have followed my Facebook posts and updates, you know it was a rough road for a bit but he is doing pretty well. Walking around with his rolling walker. Talks very well. He has began eating again, so hopefully they will remove his feeding tube soon. Although, he is a “walking, talking miracle”... he did suffer from anoxic brain injury ( lack of oxygen while he was dead). Which, is why it is taking some time for physical recovery, and being in a hospital bed for about 2 months didn’t help. Mentally, his short term memory took a pretty hard hit, but is improving a little bit. Long term memory improves everyday. He will be getting an echocardiogram Next month, cardiologists says Dad may still need a defibrillator.
Unfortunately, this has all put Dad out of work,
and if you know anything about social security disability... it is taking forever :( ! He had a
successful septic and drain field business going, and he will not be doing that for quite some time, if ever. I would like to think he would, eventually.
Dad has taken care of mom for the last 20 years, since her back troubles started. She receives very little SS because over the years, she mostly stayed home with me and Ricky. Ricky had a lot of issues, appointments and such, when he was younger and she drove him for years to St. Augustine, for school.
They have exhausted all of their savings, having to pay bills and paying for meds for both mom and dad now. Shortly before the heart attack, they had replaced the roof and the air conditioner, on the house.
As hard as it is to reach out for help, I am... for them, because they are my parents, they need help, and they have always, always been there for me and our family. They are good people, and would do anything they could for others.
What I really want to do with this, is help them with a few bills and meds until Dad’s SS kicks in ( hopefully soon!) and maybe get a start on a redo of their shower for both of their SAFETY! I worry so much about that.
Thank you for anything you can do! If you would like to reach out to me because you are not comfortable with a go fund me , please message me.
I love you mom and dad!! ❤️
