Unexpected passing of loving husband and father

Donation protected
Darrell Butler passed away on April 15, 2020 at the age of 67, from a pulmonary embolism as a result of
multiple surgeries to repair complications from routine back surgery. The suddenness of his death has
left his family reeling.
Darrell became a father later in life and leaves behind two daughters, ages 10 and 12, who along with
his wife of 16 years, must find a way to move forward from this tragedy. In addition to his wife and
children, Darrell left behind five siblings, countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. They have all been
devastated from the loss of Darrell and the suddenness of his passing.
To say that his children were his world would be an understatement. Prior to his back issues and
multiple hospitalizations, Darrell devoted himself to caring for his children. After his retirement, Darrell
began caring for the girls while his wife worked. He helped with homework, read bedtime stories, made
lunches, dinners, breakfast, and transported them to and from school every day.
Even when his pain was at its worst, he never missed a recital, school program, or activity that the girls
were involved in. He kept every note, letter, card, award, and drawing the girls made.
As one can imagine, both girls are devastated by their father’s passing. They question who will give them
daddy hugs, remind them to say their prayers every night, be the tickle monster, and call them the
nicknames that he created for them. As they work through their grief, they have begun to recognize that
he will never take them bike riding again, won’t teach them how to fish, that he won’t be there for their
birthdays, Christmas, or any other holiday that he always made extra special.
Outside of his family, Darrell’s reach was far and wide. For years he worked with the homeless, helping
them identify housing and helping them identify resources to help them be the best they could be. He
counseled those struggling with addiction, hoping that his words would offer some form of
encouragement to an already challenging situation. His faith in God was strong and for years he
belonged to a church family that he loved and thanked God for every day. His passion for bicycling
brought him a new group of friends, many of whom he considered his brothers and sisters.
Due to the ongoing restrictions surrounding the Coronavirus, a memorial service will occur after
restrictions surrounding social gathering have been lifted.
For those looking to offer their support to Darrell's family, we ask that you consider making a donation
to this GoFundMe campaign, and encourage you to please share with your network of friends &
family. We realize that offering financial support to the Butler family during this uncertain time may be
difficult for some. Please know that any amount is appreciated tremendously as we work closer to
reaching our fundraising goal.
