The mental health of persons with intellectual disabilities is grossly and unacceptably neglected. Our names are Farrah, Sienna, and Sofia, and we are high school students who created and run United Abilities, a non-profit whose goal is to bring fun activities to people with intellectual disabilities. Farrah and Sienna have a brother, Paul, who has Down syndrome and lives in a group home. Pre-Covid, Paul and other residents would go on outings together with the supervision of staff members, however, these activities were removed during Covid for safety. This is the case for other group homes who either stopped doing activities or did not have them originally. These activities are incredibly important to house members as they foster friendship, happiness, and improve mental health. Our activities allow residents to have fun and build a community with the aid of a volunteer in person or via an online platform. The donations that we receive funds materials and shipping and logistical fees. We want to keep our activities free for residents and their families because we believe that happiness shouldn't come at a cost. We greatly appreciate every donation. Thank you!
