ROLANDO MEZA, HUDSON COUNTY JAIL

Donation protected
ROLANDO MEZA:  Mistaken for another undocumented immigrant who had been ordered deported, Mr. Rolando Meza was arrested in Brentwood, Long Island and detained at the Hudson County Jail, and placed in proceedings where he had no right to go before a judge or see a lawyer before being deported. Through the intervention of an attorney, he was given the chance to go before an Immigration Judge, however during the months he was detained while awaiting a hearing, he died of “internal bleeding and hemorrhagic shock” from pre-existing conditions that went untreated while in custody.

Rolando is survived by his spouse Darleny Rivera, daughter and two stepchildren as well as three children from a prior relationship.

Prior to his arrest, Meza was the sole financial provider for Darleny Rivera, daughter age 8  and two step daughters ages 12 and 10.

Darleny is now the sole financial provider for her three daughters and barely meeting living expenses while working at a packaging company and caring for her three young daughters.

Your minimum contribution of $5.00  would help Darleny cover basic living expenses including rent and food during a projected long litigation against ICE and the Hudson County Correction Facility.

Various immigration civil liberty organizations including ACLU and NJAIJ are demanding justice for Rolando Meza, who died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and failed to provide adequate medical care.  These organizations and Meza's attorney believe Meza's death is an example of ICE's disregard for civil rights and the constitution as well as the horrible conditions at Hudson County Jail.  On June 26, civil rights groups held a vigil at the Hudson County Jail and called on the Hudson County leadership to end their contract with ICE.   Since then, an independent oversight committee was established to investigat the death of Rolando and the medical treatment provided by the agency.

Our target is $10,000.  Your minimum contribution of $5.00 and more importantly your support against ICE's overreaching and aggressive removal enforcement of Immigrants will be noted.

Thank you for your attention and anticipated financial support.  The Portela Law Firm is contributing the first donation of $1,000.

Rolando is the Tenth detainee to die in ICE custody this year according to the ICE release or Rolando death.
