Hi, my name is Phil, I am calling upon family, friends and the London community to help fundraise £5000 with the aim of getting 50 bikes to young black and ethnic minority people in London.
We live in one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. Londoner's from ethnic minority groups contribute massive amounts to our culture and our economy. We've seen the devastating effect that Covid-19 has had on London's ethnically diverse community, with some people from minority ethnic groups twice as likely to die from the deadly virus than white people, and the global Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted just how much inequality is ingrained in today’s society.
Despite it being unsafe, many people from our ethnically diverse community have had to continue to travel to work, school or to care for their family throughout the pandemic. Many others are now facing extreme financial difficulty and can no longer afford to travel by public transport.
upCYCLE’s mission is simple; we offer a safe and free way to travel. We take second-hand bikes and refurbish them, before donating them to charities like Voyage, a London-based social justice organisation that aims to empower marginalised black and culturally diverse young people.
The time for collective action is long overdue. Please donate as little or as much as you can. For example, £5 will pay for a pair of lights, £10 will go towards a strong lock to secure the bike or £20 can get a decent helmet to keep the young people safe.
Please get in touch via the website if you have an unused bike, you'll find a contact form and email address. Be part of the change. Find out more on our website and Insta.
Thanks, Phil
