URBC Mutual Aid for UK International Students
The UK COVID-19 lockdown has reinforced many of the barriers that all migrants in the UK experience because of the hostile environment policy and xeno-racist border controls laws.
Among these migrants are many thousands of international students studying in the UK, who are impacted by both the hostile environment policy, and the marketised higher education structures that treat them more as numbers than as human beings.
As a result of the COVID pandemic, we have witnessed international students being forced to leave their university accommodations at a number of colleges at the University of Cambridge .
We have seen a number of cases of international students being threatened with removal from their courses during the lockdown because their universities have misinterpreted the relevant immigration regulations .
However, more disturbingly, we have learned that a number of international students are going hungry during this lockdown because they lack the funds to buy food.
Unis Resist Border Controls believes that no international student should be treated in such a negligent manner by their university & by the Home Office, particularly during a global pandemic.
For this reason, we have started this mutual aid fundraiser to help international students to get urgent funds necessary to pay for basic necessities like food, medicine, & rent.
After the 31st May 2020, the nature of the fundraiser will expand to include support for any international students in the UK stranded because of the COVID-19 lockdown who need financial support to either extend their visa and/or if students want to return home.
If you are an UK based international student who needs financial help, please email URBC : [email redacted]
