Urgent aid needed: Health & Hurricane aftermath Challenges
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Greg. I am reaching out to ask for your support for my sister and her family, who, like so many others, have unexpectedly been impacted by Hurricane Helene. Two months ago, they moved into their first house in Upstate South Carolina, just below the border with North Carolina, and are surrounded by beautiful country. I'm very proud of them, yet so jealous hehe. Before they could even get completely settled, they now are facing an overwhelming situation without the resources to be able to handle the issues.
My sister, her husband, my nephew who is on the autism spectrum, my niece, and my own son, who recently moved in to prepare for his and his wife's relocation to Columbia, SC (once her active military service ends in a month), are facing the aftermath. Sadly, they have a couple of complications which make their situation dire and is what compelled me to use this platform.
My sister has several health issues, including POTS disease(Nervous System Disorder), multiple sclerosis (MS), and she is an insulin-dependent diabetic. The storm has left a hot mess, the least of which is the continued power outage. They are going to need help to get to the other side. This is the least I can do to help the person who has always been the first to be there for me and has never ever asked for anything in return.
Here are the challenges they are facing: significant damage to the roof and siding of their home, yard covered in debris, flooded septic system, power outage since last Friday with restoration possibly expected this coming Friday, and spoiled insulin due to lack of refrigeration. Not to mention a total of 5 mouths to feed and the terrible hunt to find supplies to do that. At last check, supplies are scarce in her area, including ice and bottled water. Given the health challenges, these things are critical and the primary cause of my worry.
I can proudly say that despite these challenges, my sister and her family are staying strong, doing what they can, and smiling all the time. However, they cannot do it alone. Some of their needs are immediate and cannot wait until claims can be filed with their homeowner’s insurance provider and, even if filed, it will be weeks before they get a decision or any disbursement. The real immediate items are food, clean drinking water, insulin, and fuel. They are needed now and in quantities to carry them through to recovery, not in 3 to 4 weeks when the insurance provider approves the claim and pays.
In the only way I can help, I am seeking to raise funds ($6k total) to cover the deductible for the homeowner's claim ($5k), the costs of assistance in cleaning up the yard and removing debris, pumping out the septic system which currently cannot be used because of flood damage, replacing spoiled food, and ensuring my sister has the medical supplies she needs long term.
Any amount you can contribute will make a significant difference in their lives and will be put to getting right again. Their strength and your generosity will help them recover from this event and get them started up again towards living the good life.
