Urgent Care Needed for Fire-Affected Horses

Donation protected
Hi there my name is Philippa Price. I grew up in Los Angeles and love this city more than any place on earth.
This summer I bought my first home in Altadena. As a life long horse girl, I fell in love with the rural meets city community right away. And it has been beyond heartbreaking to watch the Eaton fire destroy the area as well as my own home. And on top of that, as an animal lover, I couldn’t help but worry about the horses and other large animals that were being affected by the fires.

The devastating Eaton Canyon, Palisades, and Hurst Fires have displaced so many animals across the city, leaving many injured and without a home

On the morning after the Eaton fire broke out, while many were still evacuating, I got a message from a friend that six horses were stuck in the foothills of Altadena. After posting on instagram that I was in search of a trailer and with the help of a community of horse lovers, we were able to get them all out.

One three year old mare was in dire condition and immediately taken to Chino Valley Equine Hospital. With the severity of her burns and the amount of smoke she inhaled, she requires extensive treatment and rehabilitation in order to survive. We are raising money to pay for her hospital stay as well as long term care.

The other five horses are currently at the city shelter at LAEC. They are in much better shape but still suffering from eye infections and more minor burns. And they are not alone…the shelter is currently housing hundreds of horses along with donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs etc etc from across the city that have been affected by these fires.

We are actively working with the shelter and other volunteers to provide the care these animals desperately need. Right now, we are covering these costs ourselves, but the need is immense, and we cannot do it alone. We’re asking for your help to support as many animals as we can during this critical time. The funds we raise will go directly toward:

Veterinary care and medical supplies for the burnt mare at Chino Valley Equine Hospital as well board and feed costs for her long term care until she is able to be rehomed (estimated to be $15-25k)

We are also raising money for the other horses without homes and supporting owners who can’t afford to cover medical bills, transport, moving, and boarding as well as feed and essential supplies during this crisis.

Update : With the funds raised we have been able to pay the bills for 4 horses’ emergency vet needs directly with Dr Wheat.

In addition to financial contributions, we urgently need:

Space to house and/or foster horses—if you can provide a safe haven, please let us know.
Help reconnecting lost horses with their owners—if you know of anyone missing their horse, please get in touch.

Our hearts are broken for the loss and devastation this fire has caused across Los Angeles. Thank you for your support during this incredibly difficult time.

xoxo Philippa Price (and my sister Natasha Price)
