Urgent Eye Surgery for Frodo, Sam, and Bilbo

Frodo, Sam, and Bilbo are kittens we have had since they were 3 weeks old. They were diagnosed with eyelid agenesis at about 4 weeks old. This is a disorder that caused their eyelids to not form properly, or at all. Without eyelids, this causes them to have constant irritation to their eyes because their fur and debris are constantly irritating their eyes. Sam (the orange one) we thought was born without an eye, Frodo has already had an enucleation due to her eye rupturing, and Bilbo’s eyes are constantly irritated and are at risk of losing their vision.

According to their vet visit with Dr. Baranik’s office, Sam is already blind and will most likely need a double eye enucleation. It may appear that she was born without an eye, but there are most likely remnants of an eye which is causing irritation and drainage.

Because the corrective surgery for eyelid agenesis is still relatively new, most vets do not even do it (and lots of people we called didn’t even know what we were talking about).

We are looking at getting them in with Blue Pearl or UGA. Both of these places require a $275 exam fee for each kitten. This is urgent as we want to try to save their vision.

Sam will be getting a double eye enucleation most likely with Dr. Baranik, which will be roughly $500. Frodo and Bilbo will need to go see an ophthalmologist and their exam fee is $275 each. This brings us to $150, and then the surgery itself will be $1k+ for each cat.

Once they are seen by an ophthalmologist, we plan to go from there.
