Urgent fundraiser to cover vital medical costs

We are raising money on behalf of a staunch Naarm-based community member who was unfairly dismissed from work several months ago, forcing them to use up their limited savings while experiencing a period of psychosis which has significantly impacted their capacity to find work. Last week they were also assaulted on public transit, a deeply traumatic breaking point which has further impacted their financial situation. While they have been deeply involved in contributing to mutual aid, grassroots advocacy and organising for many years, we want to make sure that they can lean into receiving care and support at a time where they need it most.

Approximately $7000 is needed to ensure that our friend can cover significant medical costs (medical debt, medication, psychologist and psychiatrist to avoid re-institutionalisation) for 2-3 months while they heal and work towards the stability required to allow them to secure employment again. While they are currently accessing Centrelink, these payments are nowhere near enough to cover the range of costs associated with both keeping them housed and allowing them to recover over the next few months until they're back on their feet.

Funds will help cover:

•⁠ ⁠Medical and financial debt from acute care management

•⁠ ⁠Urgent routine psychiatrists and psychologist appointments

•⁠ ⁠Ongoing GP + allied health costs

•⁠ ⁠Medication

Being unable to access this healthcare is directly preventing our friend from transitioning back to work. Mutual aid is urgently needed at this critical point to help our deeply loved friend find safety and stability.
