Urgent funds needed to help save Carmel

Hi, my name is Amy Scott, and I'm setting up a fundraiser for my lovely mother Carmel Scott's medical costs.

 

On Tuesday morning (05/04/2022), she attended a clinic with ongoing pain; they administered IV medication for a kidney infection and sent her away after requesting her return to the clinic on Wednesday morning for more IV medication. Since Wednesday morning, Carmel has been in ICU in Hospital San Roque in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, Spain. She is currently ventilated, on IV antibiotics, IV hydrocortisone, IV omeprazole, dialysis and NG feeding.

 

She is presently critical, diagnosed with sepsis originating from her kidney infection and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy from sepsis (DIC). A CT scan on Friday morning showed a stone obstructing her ureter with grade 2 hydronephrosis. For this, she had a JJ stent (Ureteric stent) insterted into her left kidney. She is also receiving ongoing platelet transfusions for DIC. Her kidneys nearly completely failed too.

 

My dad and myself are currently over here in Gran Canaria. I arrived from Ireland on Thursday, went straight to the hospital to see my mam and speak with the ICU doctor. It was a relief to see her even though it was heartbreaking to see her so unwell. Visiting hours are so strict (17:00-18:00) and only one person is allowed in.

 

So far, we have spent over €35,000 upfront in medical costs and we are running out of money fast. It's a matter of life or death here. I can't stress that enough. We need your help please. Any help. Even if you share this page and post.

 

Our aim is to get her back to Ireland as soon as is feasible. At the moment, she's still too unstable to travel home via air ambulance.

 

Carmel has touched the lives of many people with how caring and loving she is; Her infectious laugh and smile. She's one of those people who make you instantly feel good about yourself and would do anything to help others. Always has put other people before herself. We are all so lost and devastated by this. If any of you could please help, I would be forever grateful. I'm not sure how much it's going to cost, but as I already said, anything will help.

Our travel insurance company, Blue Insurance, has refused to pay anything for us. My mam was taken to a private hospital without our consent, hence the extortionate costs we have to pay upfront. Luckily, our Irish health insurance, Laya Healthcare, are agreeing to pay some of the bills. We applied for an EHIC card last night (09/04/2022) which will help with costs only when she is fit to be transferred to a public hospital. Right now, Carmel is too unstable to be transferred to another hospital.
