Urgent Help for Ilovik

The people from the island of Ilovik are organizing a protest in Opatija to protest the closing of the port of Mrtvaska. This GoFundMe is necessary because they need our financial support for transportation costs to get to Opatija (bus rental, ferry, gasoline).

Why is this protest needed?

The county Port Authority is not allowing access through Mrtvaska, the port that is Ilovik's lifeline to the main island of Losinj. They re-routed the public transit boat line which previously was a 10 minute trip, and now it is an 80 minute sail over open waters. This construction is predicted to last at least two years. Even after the project is completed, the design of the new dock will not allow docking of small local boats. This is causing great disruption in the daily lives of the people of Ilovik. Two major problems are that there are children who go to Losinj for school whose education is being disrupted because they are unable to access the port, and healthcare of elderly inhabitants which is very difficult as there is no access to healthcare on the island of Ilovik itself. In the long run, if this project goes on as currently planned, it threatens the very existence of our beloved village.
