Urgent Emergency: Pregnant Mother Facing Homelessness and Medical Crisis
Dear compassionate souls,
I'm B.C. Hatch, a mother of a sweet 8-year-old gifted little girl and now expecting another child in the midst of an unthinkable emergency.
I'm writing to you from the precipice of homelessness, my body battling ongoing physical medical issues while carrying my unborn son. My daughter and I face an uncertain future, abandoned by a partner who promised to be there and help support our growing family.
A Medical Battle Against Time
My body wages a daily war:
- 4 spinal hernias scream with each movement
- My pelvis, previously fractured in 5 places due to a car accident, combined with pregnancy, has created instability and non-stop pain in that area of my body
- Scars from a previous C-section foreshadow the challenges ahead
- A torn ACL, coupled with the pregnancy hormone "relaxin," causes my knee to regularly slip out of place, making walking unstable. This recently led to a fall and sprained knee, further limiting my mobility and putting me and the baby at further risk for falls.
Sadly, I am unable to work as a result of the above physical impairments and forced to stop medication to treat my ADHD (which was already exacerbated by the impact of permanent damage from a severe brain injury in my teens). I currently have to navigate each day through a fog of pain and uncertainty.
This medical crisis forms the core of our emergency, with time ticking away as my pregnancy progresses.
A Dream Shattered, Support Withdrawn
What transforms this into a true emergency is the sudden withdrawal of promised support:
- My fiancé and I mutually agreed to this pregnancy, aware it would impact my ability to work
- At 5 weeks pregnant, I asked to move our wedding up for insurance reasons
- His response: "I don't owe you anything," forcing me onto Medicaid
- Despite our 3-year relationship and engagement, he's now refusing any assistance, deferring me to his lawyer who has stated “he is under no legal obligation to provide anything during pregnancy."
This abrupt abandonment has left us in this devastating position, intensifying the urgency of our situation.
Georgia's Legal Gaps: A System That Fails Expectant Mothers
In Georgia, a "6-week state," women like me face a terrifying lack of legal protections:
- DCFS cannot intervene or offer assistance until after my son is born
- I have no legal recourse to compel support during pregnancy
- Essentially, I'm left without protection or support after our engagement ended. These legal gaps create an immediate crisis, leaving me vulnerable and unprotected at a time when support is crucial.
Our Immediate, Critical Needs
We have just 5 months to secure our future:
- 3 months until this baby arrives
- 2 months of recovery from a medically necessary C-section. During this short window, we urgently need:
o A safe haven to call home
o Basic utilities for warmth and hygiene
o A stable environment for my child to sleep, play, and feel secure
The time-sensitive nature of these needs underscores why this truly is an emergency situation.
My Little Warriors
Through this storm, my 8-year-old remains my North Star. Their brave smile, hiding worries no child should bear, keeps me fighting. And for my unborn son, I'll move mountains – once I recover from the medical issues worsened by this pregnancy.
Your Help: Our Last Hope in This Emergency
Every contribution is a lifeline in our emergency. It's more than just money…it's the safety for my children, a chance to keep my family together, and hope for a future where we can thrive, not just struggle to survive.
I never imagined being in this situation and being here begging for help. But faced with debilitating health issues, a system that fails to protect women and children, and a partner who abandoned his promises (and his unborn child), I have no choice. Your kindness today could be the difference between shelter and the streets, or between a family united and a family torn apart. From the depths of my heart, thank you for reading our story.
Your help, in any form, is a beacon of hope in our darkest hour. By supporting this emergency fund, you're not just donating – you're potentially saving two young lives and giving a desperate mother a fighting chance.
With profound gratitude and hope,
