Help for Marlene to Rebuild Her Home After Eaton Fire

Donation protected
My cousin’s house was completely burned to the ground in the Eaton Fire this week. She quickly had to evacuate, without the help of her husband as he is currently out of the country for work. Even in the most prepared situations, it is difficult to bring everything with you during an evacuation outside of the essentials. This horrendous loss is unspeakable and she is absolutely devastated.

My cousins and I went to visit her just a few weeks ago for the holidays. She graciously invited us into her home and was the perfect host. She provided us with everything we needed and more, she shared her home and her community that she had come to know and love with pride. We went to see the famous Christmas Tree Lane — the majority of that entire neighborhood has been destroyed. The footage of the neighborhood is barely recognizable. As we drove around I remember her sharing with us, emotionally, how she never imagined she would have a life like this — a beautiful home in Altadena with her husband and dogs. In just a matter of hours, this dream tragically went up in flames and we are heartbroken for her and with her.

Like many in my family, we came from humble beginnings to put it kindly… a small town in El Salvador to a big city in California in pursuit of the American dream. First and foremost, we are grateful she is safe. Material items can be replaced, life cannot. However, all over the news we’re hearing at best insurance companies may only pay out around a third of your property value and yet the memories you share in a home, years of good moments and bad, pictures, treasures, and keepsakes — these things are priceless and irreplaceable.

Individually, it’s difficult to ask for help, especially in a time of desperation and despair. Collectively, we are stronger; if there is any amount you can provide, it would be greatly appreciated. My intention is that 100% of the proceeds go to her to in an effort to rebuild from the ground up and replace basic necessities. Much of her family is Virginia and El Salvador and while we cannot be there with her physically at this time, the financial support will be a bandage until we can reunite with her.
