Urgent Relief for Wendy's Flood-Damaged Home
Donation protected
Wendy Romero needs her community's support to get back on her feet after extreme rains damaged her home. Wendy is a single mother to 4 children, all under the age of 18, and is a fierce advocate for local families, food sovereignty, and land access in Northfield & Faribault.
On June 9th, a huge thunderstorm rolled through Faribault. Wendy's sons, who sleep downstairs, woke up to 4" of standing water in the basement. Everything in the basement was destroyed - beds, clothing, irreplaceable family photos, furniture, and anything else touching the floor. Wendy's insurance will not cover any of the damage and she is required to pay out of pocket for all expenses.
A contractor began to clean-up the damage, but Wendy wasn't able to pay the full amount, so the contractor did not finish. Because the clean-up was not complete, much of the basement still has wet sheetrock and soaked insulation. The longer the damaged materials sit, the greater the risk of mold and mildew. It is urgent that the clean-up can complete as soon as possible to reduce the health risk to Wendy's family.
The totals for this are estimated at:
$11,000 - CLEAN-UP COSTS
$8,000 - what contractor has already charged for partial clean-up
$3,000 - estimated costs to complete the mitigation
(ie remove the rest of the damaged sheetrock and insulation)
$10,500 - REPLACING DAMAGED MATERIALS
$5,500 - buying new floor, sheetrock, insulation, & carpet
$5,000 - cost to install new materials
TOTAL COST OUT OF POCKET: $21,500
None of this flood damage is covered by Wendy's home insurance and she is responsible for this entire cost of cleaning up and replacing the damaged materials. There are no regional support programs that can assist Wendy financially. All money raised will go directly to Wendy and her family. Please share widely to support Wendy!
