Urgent Spinal surgery for Lebanese mother

I trust this message finds you in good health. Today, I am reaching out to share a deeply personal story, and ask for your support during a difficult time.

My dear friend’s mother, a woman of courage and strength, urgently requires back surgery in Lebanon, slated to happen next week.

A few months ago, my friends mom suffered a collapsed column, which is has been pressing on the nerves leading to her legs. Due to the nerve being crushed, she is suffering severe pain in legs that has made her immobile. She led a very active lifestyle but for the past two months now she has been laying in bed unable to move, and has been living with debilitating pain day and night. Her sleep has been severely impacted as well. Because of these severe symptoms, she will need a spinal fusion. The surgery will fix the collapsed columns with titanium rods and screws, which are imported from Germany and make up most of the cost of the surgery.

This operation is essential for her wellbeing, but it comes with a high price tag of $8,000 - a cost currently beyond our financial abilities. My friend has been on the phone with insurance companies day and night, and they have refused to accept her.

Adding complexity to our situation, Lebanon has also been grappling with a severe financial crisis and other catastrophic events that have escalated the challenges we are facing. The crisis has impacted not only the cost of healthcare but also the accessibility of necessary medical procedures.

My good friend, a dedicated PhD student, who has preferred to stay anonymous, has been managing her demanding academic responsibilities whilst also supporting her mother financially for the past 6 years. Despite her best efforts to mobilize her savings, the resources available are not sufficient to cover the full cost of this indispensable surgery.
