USD SFRR Feminine Hygiene Product Drive

Donation protected
Students for Reproductive Rights has been hosting the feminine hygiene drive for the past four years, making this year our 5th annual drive. We started this drive to help bring awareness to and help with the issue of period poverty in our community. The extra expense of sanitary products can affect not only women’s health, but their education and income as well. On average, a woman uses 11,000 tampons in her lifetime, costing her upwards of $70 a year; and, you can’t buy these items with food stamps, which can be financially crippling for women and girls that don’t have the change to spare. In addition to that, young girls skip school every month because they simply do not to have access to feminine hygiene products, which is violating their right to engaging in education to further their development. The ability to move about freely in public spaces every day of the month should be a right, not a luxury; and we hope by hosting this Tampon Drive that we are giving these women in our community back a little bit of their dignity.

In the last four years we have been able to raise and donate over 8,000 products to women and girls in our community. These donations have gone to the Vermillion Welcome Table and the Domestic Violence Safe Options. Our drive is the major donor to these organizations for feminine hygiene products, and the individuals they serve rely on this drive.

For our 5th annual drive we have a new addition to that we want to implement. We are going to be making  “period packs” to donate to the Vermillion Middle and High school, thanks to a donation from USD Student Government Association.

However, since to the recent developments with the COVID-19 pandemic, classes have been moved online, so we are unable to host our drive on campus. Nonetheless, the issue of period poverty is not taking a break, so we are moving our drive online. We are now asking for monetary donations, and we will then purchase the products to donate. Donations do not need to be huge, in fact a $5 donation is equal to one box of tampons. We hope that you will consider donating so that we can help women with financial needs in the community improve their quality of life in a small way.
