Useful Waste Initiative

Donation protected
“Useful Waste” is a Center for Public Interest Design initiative that aims to re-frame the industries view on construction waste and encourage material diversion and reuse. The intent of this initiative is to utilize an overlooked material resource - stand alone construction mock-ups - by re-purposing the material and responding to pressing social needs, such as the local housing emergency. Mock-ups are seen as temporary structures and typically end up in the landfill due to lack of pre-planning and immobility. This initiative facilitates a new process of material diversion within the typical construction schedule and requirements.

The aim of this campaign is to finish the construction of 1-3 sleeping pods for a local village in Portland, OR  that assists people who are houseless. A sleeping pod is a small 10 foot by 10 foot structure for individuals or couples, with basic electrical for heating.  It provides shelter for houseless individuals as well as a community and residential services to help transition village residents into permanent housing.

The funds raised will directly serve the initiative through purchasing building materials, offsetting transportation costs, and renting construction equipment needed to complete the build of these sleeping pods. Any remaining funds will go to the next stage of building future sleeping pods throughout 2019.

Your support will directly support people in the Portland community experiencing houselessness by providing basic shelter.
