From USMC veteran Megan Lowry: "I have debated going public with this, but now more than ever I feel my community needs to know to watch out for and create new legislation to protect families against general contractors who steal thousands, then can file bankruptcy, just simply walking away with no recourse.

Here’s the story:

I am a disabled Marine Corps veteran, I train service dogs for veterans (for free), and volunteer in my community to tackle the suicide epidemic among veterans.

Last year I was blessed to be able to start construction on a house that would be ADA compliant and have specific areas needed to house and train service dogs. I used money my father left me after he (a veteran as well) completed suicide, to buy the land with my mother who recently retired. My mother will be living with me so I can take care of her.

My wonderful realtor (she’s superwoman) put me in touch with a brand new, local builder. All media said he was the new up and coming, example for all, new custom home builder. He is registered as a minister, taught classes on how to start a business as a general contractor etc.

The construction company on OSCN at the time of hire, did not have any legal issues. The owner, now has judgements and liens against him and his clients - myself included- for hundreds of thousands of dollars (totaled).

To date:
He paid $59k to subcontractors
Left me with $61k-$70k in liens against me personally because he was smart and took out the clause in the contract that would protect his clients- I think he did this on purpose knowing he was in financial trouble.

I have given him just shy of $168k to build the new house, so he’s roughly walking away with $108k of my home loan.

Yes I hired a lawyer, no he doesn’t think we will recoup any money lost. He said The owner is a prime candidate for filing bankruptcy and the slate will be wiped clean for him, while I remain on the hook for the money.

My bank is local, and they are working with us but this makes me sick. I’ve talked with several other contractors and all have said this is a major problem and that this happens all the time here and there is nothing we can do about it.

My house is unfinished, the warranty’s are out because they way he left the property and for how long he left it sitting there, we are now entering our rainy tornado season.

This man lied to my face every time I met with him, promising me work and completion while never batting an eye. He has betrayed my mom and I. He is a thief. He has stated that he wants to try to explore options to get us paid back some of our money, but it’s just another lie.

He wanted to work with veterans and be a veteran friendly business, I wanted every veteran in the area to know - DO NOT EVER WORK WITH THIS MAN.

Help me get this story to the news, I have all the paperwork evidence and am willing to share it.

I would also ask that veterans in the community come together to show this man, we leave no one behind, we are a strong community who doesn’t take this crap, we protect and advocate for each other."

Let's come together for this veteran who is trying to do good things in our veteran advocacy towards eliminating veteran suicide!!!
