Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an important time of year for Muslim’s across the globe. Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement, and heightened devotion and worship to God. The main objective of Ramadan is to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, and to overall encourage a healthy lifestyle. Muslims fast from eating and drinking from dawn until dusk. Although Ramadan is a religious ritual, it has a significant social and economic impact, especially in Guinea.
Eighty-five percent of the Guinean population is Muslim. Although Guinea Conakry is rich in natural resources, Guinea faces major socio-economic challenges, and malnutrition remains high within many communities. Ironically, the rituals of Ramadan focus on food. Yet, half of the Guinean population lives in poverty, and many households are vulnerable to food insecurity. Ideally, Ramadan is a time for families to pray, share laughter, and share meals together. The reality, however, is that Ramadan tends to highlight one's financial circumstances and daily limitations for those less fortunate.
We are a community of Guinean Americans who believe it is important to give back to our people. Islam teaches us the value of generosity, especially during the month of Ramadan. Many of us are fortunate enough to share some of our favorite meals with our families and loved ones, however many Guineans back home are not able to do the same. This Ramadan we want to help as many Guinean families as possible, to have the opportunity to share their favorite meals with their loved ones-- at least for one night. No matter what religion, race, or color, we make up one community--the human race. Please help us give back to those who are less fortunate. It is a gift to be in a position to lend a helping hand. With every generous act, comes great reward from God.
