USS Iowa Plaque Honoring Iowa 47

Donation protected
The Veterans Association of the USS Iowa is seeking donations for the repair and restoration of the plaque that honors our 47 shipmates that lost their lives in the Turret Two explosion on April 19, 1989.  The repair that needs to be done is the correction of one of our shipmate’s rank.  As you can see from one of the attached photos this correction  was important enough for a family or friend to make the  revision themselves.

The original donor, Owen Foundation, , is out of business;. we requested quotes from a couple of foundries in the area and received one back. The cost is nearly $5,000 to remove, clean, repair, restore, preserve and re-install the plaque back onto the stone base at Iowa Point on the Norfolk Naval Base.

All funds collected will be “Restricted” and will only be used for Iowa Point and Monument projects.  All funds in excess of the $5,000 collected will be used to offset any unexpected costs associated with the project, as well as the future maintenance and upkeep of Iowa Point and monument project.  Funds may also be used to make a copy of the plaque to be placed on the Iowa that is moored in California .

If you wish to mail your donation please make check payable to “Veterans Assn of the USS Iowa”  and in the memo field state “Restricted for Iowa Point/Monuments”.  You can mail your donation to 8 Leshner Lane  Burlington, NJ 08016.
