My beautiful Nava was diagnosed with stage 2 Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) just six weeks before graduating with honors from Gaither High School in Tampa, Florida. ALCL is a rare and serious form of blood cancer that aggressively attacks young people. And yet, Nava approaches this stage of her life with the same determined but gracious spirit she's had since she was a little girl. Her positive attitude has warmed the hearts of doctors, nurses and other cancer patients at All Children's Hospital.
Although Nava and I are confident that her story will have a happy ending, the road to victory over cancer will be long and steep with numerous rounds of chemotherapy and hospital stays over the next six months. Nausea, headaches, lack of energy, loss of appetite and the eventual loss of hair are side effects of chemo treatments. And we need continuous prayers and encouragement. So many have asked what they can do to lessen the difficulties of the journey ahead. It is with much humility, that I ask for your help.
As you might imagine, cancer is an extremely costly illness. I am a single mother of two, and the financial burden of making sure that Nava receives all that she needs to beat cancer will become increasingly difficult to bear. Although health insurance relieves some of the expenses for her care, I am financially responsible for 20 percent of hospital stays, chemo treatments, x-rays, MRIs and clinical visits in addition to prescription medicine and other out-of-pocket expenses such as medical supplies. Your financial support, whether a little or a lot, will help keep that smile on Nava's face and a grateful smile on my heart. We appreciate you for joining us on this journey.
