Hello! Thanks for visiting our page. Whether you’re here thanks to a facebook post, an email, or being desperately begged by a random poet on the street, we’re glad you’ve decided to have a look at our campaign!
Who are we?
We are UVA’s third ever CUPSI team! Five poets who are passionate and talented enough to be chosen by the University’s only Poetry and Spoken Word club, Flux, to represent them in Houston!
Hold on. Houston? CUPSI?
CUPSI is the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational, an international competition where college-age slam poets can share their stories, let their voice be heard, and compete to be the very best! This year the competition is held at the University of Houston, and we need your help to attend!
Alright, what do you need from me, the humble friend or family member?
Short answer: money.
Longer answer: It costs money to sponsor a CUPSI team! Registration, travel, lodging, food, and a salary for our amazing coaches all cost money to cover! We’ve been fundraising with grant sources at UVa, receiving help from Student Council, the Parents Fund, The Cultural Programming Board and the Office of the Dean of Students, but we aren’t there yet! We strive to pay our coaches, Elliott Carter, Rachel Abrams, and Anna Beecher, a stipend because we acknowledge how valuable their work is! Your contribution will cover the rough edges in our budget that funding sources haven't provided, quite literally saving our team's economic situation!
I’m still not convinced.
Your contribution helps further the arts at the University of Virginia, and creates an experience that is life-changing for any one of our wonderful, talented team members. The team was selected in December at our Flux Grand Slam by five randomly-selected judges from an audience of well over 100 people. The team that was chosen is aware of their responsibility to the club to produce the best poems possible, and to inspire creativity in the other members of the club from their awesome poems and bright personalities.
Anything helps! And thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Flux Poetry and Spoken Word at the University of Virginia
& the UVa CUPSI team
