While we try to teach our children about life, our children teach us what life is all about.
If you have met our nephew Hunter, you have most likely fallen in love with one of the sweetest, bravest little boys on this earth. He was born on December 2, 2010 and entered this world weighing 4lb 11oz. He faced multiple challenges from day one. He was born with vertical talus (rocker bottom feet), low birth weight, feeding issues, high muscle tone and hearing loss. The doctors were certain that he had some type of syndrome, although it would be quite a challenge to figure out exactly what syndrome he had.
After years of unanswered questions, the doctors believe they have discovered he has Cockayne Syndrome. This is a rare but destructive and devastation disease where there is a defect in the DNA repair mechanism, resulting in multiple health issues.
Hunter has undergone multiple surgeries - ear tubes, feeding tube, and foot surgery with casting. He wears hearing aids and has a wheelchair for use when needed. He has undergone years of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and feeding therapy.
Even though Hunter has overcome so much, he still has a long road ahead of him, with many surgeries, tests and therapies.
Hunter is a true blessing and the sunshine in our days, but the years of dealing with his health issues have taken a toll. Bills have added up, therapies, prescriptions, hearing aids/hearing aid checks/ear molds all NOT covered by insurance. Not to mention travel back and forth to doctor appointments missed work and other expenses.
