The fundraising campaign is to help 100 displaced kids in Cameroon go to school for the next academic year, starting in September.
With $100 you can sponsor a displaced child for the entire academy year. $100 cover $30 for school fees, $25 for books, $20 for school supplies, $10 for one uniform and $15 for a school bag & shoes. Any donation can make a huge difference!
Education is a human right not a privilege. We can’t say enough how important it is to have an education. Education opens the door to countless opportunities. I saw firsthand how this has been helping me throughout my life. Many times, we take receiving basic education (K-12) for granted.  Unfortunately, in the 21st century, millions of children still cannot have access to education due to war, poverty or lack of support.

This is the case in the North-West and South-West of Cameroon, where there has been a conflict since 2017 called the Anglophone crisis. According to the latest report from UNHCR from February 2021, 1,032,942 people are currently internally displaced in their own country and cannot go back to their home because of insecurity. Since 2017, hundreds of thousands of children have fled to other regions to save their lives. Sometimes, they found themselves alone because they lost their parents in the conflict. Since the conflict started, there have been many cases of death in adults as well as children. One that particularly shocked me was what happened on October 24 2020. In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, 7 kids were killed in a shooting attack on their school in Kumba, a city in the Southern region. When this happened, I was shocked, stunned and so sad and I knew that day, I needed to do something. This is one of the reason I decided to support this campaign launched by Yume Africa to help 100 displaced children from these regions called in French “les déplacés du NOSO” go to school.

The Yume Africa team went to the department of Haut-Nkam, West of Cameroon and visited these children and the families who welcomed them. These are their stories.

Joseph, the one on the video of this campaign, is 16 years old and he is sickle cell anemic. He's one of 6 children. Joseph lost his dad in the conflict and her mom had her arm cut by armed men. Due to the crisis and his sickness, he failed some classes. He is in 8th grade. He currently lives in Banka with his mom and 2 of his brothers in their grandmother's house. His desire is to have her mom get a new arm.

Success is 13 years old and in 8th grade. She is the oldest of a family of 5. She lost her dad 6 months ago. Her dad died due to sickness related to abuse caused by the conflict. Her mom Edith struggles to send them to school, to feed them regularly and to pay the rent of their studio. They all live in one bedroom.

Unfortunately, there are so many stories like that. With $100 you can sponsor a child like Joseph or Success for the entire academy year 2021-22. The money covers his/her tuition fees (unfortunately school is not free even in public schools), books, school supplies, new shoes and uniforms. Sponsoring these kids will really be a huge relief for these families who are already struggling to put food on the table. With your help we can provide a better future, hope to these kids already traumatized by what they have endured. The campaign will end on August 31.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Join us in this action by sponsoring these kids, one child at the time.
