WHAT IS THE SOCIAL SCIENCES KALEIDOSCOPE?

The Social Sciences Kaleidoscope (SSK) will be a web portal for social media channels students will use to engage external audiences about what they are learning & researching in the social sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. A call will go out in the fall 2013 semester for students to participate in the spring 2014 semester. A committee will select three projects, and each student will receive $400 (to match what they get in the university's Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program [URAP]). Students will use Vine, YouTube, podcasts, tumblr, digital stories, etc. to document learning and engage peers and members of larger communities.

EXAMPLES OF SSK PROJECTS

* A history student might produce a series of podcasts about oral histories she is conducting in the community.
* An anthropology student might create a series of YouTube videos about his archeology dig.
* A geography student might create a social map of campus.

FALL 2013 PILOT

The SSK will eventually also have a section for department-sponsored projects, where students would receive class credit instead of stipends. The Department of Geography is hosting a project for fall 2013: utilizing a tumblr, students in Introduction to GIS (GEOG 460) are sharing a semester long behind-the-scenes look at the work they are doing to earn a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate. Check it out: http://uw-parkside-gis.tumblr.com!

THEME SONG

The DJ Kaleidoscope Jukebox has generously agreed to let us use his song "The Unpossible" as our theme song. Check it out online. Also visit the Kaleidoscope Jukebox Facebook page!

THE ORGANIZER

Walt Jacobs is the Dean of the College of Social Sciences & Professional Studies. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside does not yet have online donation capability, so this project also serves as a pilot for adding that function to the UW-P website. All donations will go to Dean Jacobs, who will deposit them into a university account that will be used to process the stipend checks for the students.

Thank you for helping our students expand their learning opportunities by publishing their discoveries for the whole world to see!
