Legend... Kenneth J. Temple (a.k.a. Kenny T, KT, Buddha) was so great in and out of the pool. He had such a positive influence in the lives he touched and lived life with a fun-loving attitude. He passed in March 2019 at the young age of 43.
Kenny grew up in Newark, CA and attended Newark Memorial High School where he set swimming records and dominated the Mission Valley Athletic League. He continued his swimming greatness at the University of Wyoming. Spanning from his adolescent years to post-college he was a member of the Palo Alto Swim Club and represented Palo Alto Swim Club & the University of Wyoming at the 2000 Olympic Trials.
Kenny was also a loved coach for the Laramie Swim Club and Laramie High School. He worked at the UW Lab School as a Special Education Paraprofessional, helping kids with special needs.
His knowledge, patience, humor and genuine interest in the kids made him such an amazing coach and teacher. He had such a special gift to instill confidence in the kids he coached and taught.
We are so lucky to have had him in our lives and be a part of his.
His legacy lives on with all of us. We all shared in so many fun and great unforgettable memories with him.... and now we honor Kenny with this memorial scholarship.
The Kenneth J. Temple Scholarship award will be awarded annually to a Newark Memorial High School swim team member who plans to attend a 2-4 year college/university/trade school. Criteria for being selected for the award will be based on financial need, academic excellence, athletic excellence and/or community service. Applicants will apply through the Newark Memorial High School Career Center. A selection committee will be established annually (we hope the Temple family would like to be part of this selection committee, if they are up for it!) and the selection committee will select the scholarship awardee(s) each year. The intent of this fundraising is to ensure we have adequate funding for this annual scholarship for the foreseeable future. Depending on fundraising, we may be able to open up the scholarship to multiple or other awardees.
We have established the scholarship as a not-for-profit entity with the State of California and have been awarded official 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS. Donations made to The Kenneth J. Temple Scholarship Fund are tax-deductible.
A separate bank account has been established and 100% of donations received will go directly to the fund to be used only for scholarships.
