Peyton's Brain Surgery

This is Peyton Johnson. The oldest daughter of Courtney and Blake Chumley. At the age of 15, Peyton was diagnosed with a complex form of epilepsy that has proven to be resistant to medications that would normally control/minimize seizures. Without complaint, Peyton battled a worsening condition while navigating the pressures of high school. After countless medication regimen changes, neurology tests, consults, and worsening seizures, Peyton graduated high school Summa Cum Laude in May 2021. Peyton enrolled at Texas Tech University with an academic scholarship and planned to join the Texas Tech Goin’ Band this past fall. In August during Peyton’s first week in college, she seized uncontrollably and had to be air lifted back to Houston’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Peyton has since had to give up her scholarship to focus on her health. After many consultations, Peyton has decided to undergo brain surgery which will require a stimulation device to be implanted into her brain. Unfortunately, her health insurance has denied coverage of the surgery. The family has appealed this decision three separate times with no success in overturning the decision, which brings us here today. Peyton is scheduled for her first of two surgeries on February 9th and the family will have to pay for all expenses completely out of pocket.

For the Johnson/Chumley family asking for help does not come easy. Peyton’s late father John served our community as a police officer, paramedic, and firefighter. Her mom and step dad continue to serve our community in their roles as first responders. Giving to others has been their passion. Their family are always the ones who stand up and help our community in times of need. It’s now our turn to help them.

By the way, when Peyton does get past this and through college, she plans on becoming a doctor. We see a Dr. Peyton Johnson in our future.
