Serra Football Turf Field

Junipero Serra High School has a proud and rich tradition of athletic success along with academic excellence. Located in Gardena, California the current student population sits at 567 students, with 61% of our students currently receiving tuition assistance to remain enrolled. Through the years many have compared Serra High School’s athletic success to the story of David vs. Goliath. More in particular the Serra High School football program has grown to a great notoriety throughout the country. The current football field was constructed during the early 1950’s and since then unfortunately, the field has witnessed minimal field maintenance due to the lack of resources. The rich football tradition at Serra High reaches as far back to 1960 where our 1st All American Football player Kurt Altenberg went on to represent his alma mater at UCLA. Keeping it in the family his son, Scott is the head coach of the football program and has held that position for 17 years. Throughout the years the Serra Football program has produced many student-athletes who are model citizens on and off the field of play. We are honored to say that Serra High School is home to one Jim Thorpe award winner in Deon Figures, along with a Fred Biletnikoff award recipient in Marqise Lee and finalist in Robert Woods. Serra football will proudly be represented by 34 collegiate football players across the country as of 2015. With the help of the Serra Community and supporters of Serra Football we will be afforded the opportunity to compete with the likes of high schools that are twice the size of our campus. Achieving our goal of breaking ground for a turf field will have not only an impact towards the football and athletic programs but it will also serve the entire Serra community.
The Serra community and football program truly needs a positive and uplifting helping hand. The biggest concern is the lack of funding for the maintenance and repairs of existing facilities that have gone unchanged for over 50 years! This alone has deprived our student athletes of the athletic experience they truly deserve.
With turf field our student athletes see:
· Significantly fewer knee and lower leg injuries (47 knee injuries since 2010)
· Significantly less time lost to injury
· Reduced water usage and maintenance cost
· Consistency in field conditions and parity in competition
With the generous help of the surrounding community, Junipero Serra High School football program will be afforded the opportunity to continue its courageous story on and off the field of competition. We thank you as an athletic program for allowing us to share our story with you in our hopes for your assistance in continuing to make Serra High School a Champion!
